What did you see and what did you like?
DALÍ AND SURREALISM
Whatever the future judgment of Salvador Dali [1904-1989] may
be, it cannot be denied that he has a place all his own in the history of modern
art. His fame has been an issue of controversy, kept alive as much by Dali's
own provocative exhibitionism as by the critics and press, who have so consistently
condemned him for his excesses: 'neurotic', 'egocentric' and 'mad' are words
not infrequently used when referring to him.
"Every morning when I
wake up, I experience exquisite joy - the joy of being Salvador Dali...".
- Salvador Dali
"The only difference between
me & a madman is that I am not mad." - Salvador Dali
THE WORLD'S LARGEST SURREALIST OBJECT

Inaugurated
in 1974, the Dalí Theatre-Museum was built upon the remains of the former
Figueres theatre. It contains the broadest range of works spanning the artistic
career of Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), from his earliest artistic experiences
and his creations within the Surrealist movement down to the works of the last
years of his life. The furnishings of a room are transformed into a portrait
of Mae West. The soft lips were to become a sofa object for Edward James.
Statues and egg sculptures adorn
the top of the Salvador Dali Theater Museum in Figueras, Spain, May 9, 2000.
The Dali Theater-Museum was the biggest work of the artist's life and he is
buried in an unmarked crypt at the center of the main exhibition hall, surrounded
by the irrational, incomprehensible and just downright comical.
